Australia celebrates

World Teachers’ Day

Friday 29 October

World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated across Australia on Friday 29 October 2021, a bit later than the international day due to our school holidays. It’s a chance to celebrate teaching and for communities to thank teachers.

Easy how-to guide to celebrate World Teachers’ Day

If you’re a teacher, perhaps share this article with your leadership team. The how-to guide below, our free downloadable World Teachers’ Day Celebration Kit (ZIP 20MB), and article on 10 easy ways to thank a teacher provides everything needed to plan World Teachers’ Day celebrations in your school.

On World Teachers’ Day, be sure to post a photo on your own or with colleagues in sunglasses on Twitter or Facebook to celebrate the #BrightFuture of teaching. Remember to tag @aitsl with anything you post online so we can share it too!

3-4 weeks before the day

From early October – Get the ball rolling

Start planning and think about who else can help. You might connect with the Parent Committee/Council and plan to host a morning tea for teachers. Plan an online celebration if you’re teaching remotely. If there is budget available, you could organise a small gift for each teacher. We’ve seen in previous years that a packet of native plant seeds or some chocolates go down a treat. The Celebration Kit has gift tags perfect for this. If you're teaching remotely, maybe a coffee voucher from a local business- it will help the local business too. Get students involved and encourage them to think about how they can thank teachers on the day. The Celebration Kit has plenty of things students can use in class or online such as thank you cards, badges/virtual stickers, an editable poster template, and sunglasses templates.

To encourage broader parent/carer involvement, share our accompanying article on 10 easy ways to thank a teacher on World Teachers’ Day.

2 weeks before the day

From mid-October – Share the great teaching in your school

Share the great teaching in your school leading up to World Teachers’ Day. The Celebration Kit has sample copy for your school newsletter/social media, and a cover image for your school’s Facebook page.

Collect quotes from students or parents/carers to share throughout the week. If you’re in school, promote the day using the posters provided in the Celebration Kit, or create your own using the editable poster template. If you're teaching remotely, encourage staff and students to use the World Teachers’ Day virtual meeting background.

On the day

On Friday 29 October – Celebrate the #BrightFuture of teaching

Kick-off the day with a shout-out at the morning staff meeting, assembly, or posted online, and encourage students to thank their teacher/s throughout the day. The Celebration Kit has virtual stickers students can paste into email, Teams, Zoom or Google Classroom.

If you can meet face-to-face, a morning tea, hosted by the school/Parent Council is a popular way to thank teachers. Encourage staff to bring their sunglasses and take a team photo. If you can’t come together in person on the day, book an online morning tea - staff can bring a coffee and their sunglasses for a fun online team photo.

AITSL’s World Teachers’ Day virtual photo booth will be back in 2021. Visit worldteachersday.edu.au from 14 October for a fun and easy way to get a photo on your own or with colleagues. We’ll even provide the mask and sunglasses as props in the booth!

Whether you take a photo in real life or virtually, be sure to use #BrightFuture and tag @aitsl if you post on Twitter or Facebook so we can include you in all the action.

An extra special thanks to the wonderful Highly Accomplished and Lead teachers - Aphrodite Cox, Zuhal Ghafauri, Emma Mansfield, Kerrie Quee, and Kylie Woods for helping with the above ideas.
